No nicer more complete shape in the world than the earth....my earth!

Today is a bit of a struggle. Tinkering with the idea that flags can be used to create something meaningful. One soon realises, that as this one stands, there is no natural path for the eye to follow, to be led around the picture satisfactorily.

I started this one full of cubist ideas. It seems more suggestive that previous abstracts, maybe because of the diagonal lines I have used. Artists exploit the use of diagonals to lead the viewer into the picture space and to suggest an illusion of depth.

How do I work? I work quickly, so as not to loose that initial feeling that inspired the work. My working process is an anxious one, all my hopes riding on the success or failure of the individual piece. I am looking for that spontaneous result, one that doesn't look laboured, one that is at peace with its process of creation. I can tell pretty early on if a work is going to succeed or fail.

I have to admit to a certain lethargy today. Need to have a rest and re-charge the old batteries. This one, anyway, was based on the idea of what some primitive looking shapes might feel like composed - a bit like Stonehenge. In fact I might call this one Stonehenge.

This work was inspired by looking at the work of Eva Hesse, 1936 - 1970. I am also choosing to work on a much smaller scale that I have to date. There is a curious contradiction in working on a laptop screen of 12" width and at the same time envisaging the work at 60" width!
